Thanksgiving from the Perspective of a Turkey...
Hello everyone! My name is Mr. Turkey and I'm here to tell you a little bit of my side of the Thanksgiving story that started so long ago.
First and foremost, I would like to take the opportunity and take a stance, just like Chick-Fil-A does, Eat more Chicken! Us turkey's are a proud breed of animal and we were very angry that turkey has evolved into the meat of choice at this time of year. Here are three reasons why America should have chosen another meat.
First,
THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER TYPES OF MEAT OUT THERE! Turkey takes forever to cook and we can get dry. Idk why a lot of you put us in a bag when you cook us, (P.S. there is no need to suffocate us...We are already dead). At the original thanksgiving it was said that the Pilgrims and the Native Americans ate a lot of vegetables and venison. Excellent choices! I believe there was a turkey there too, but the memory is not so clear anymore seeing how I am roughly 400 years old. I know what your thinking...How can a turkey, like myself be 392 years old? Well for starters, I don't eat turkey and secondly, I work out a lot running away from people who do try and kill me. (rough life, I know).
Why did your ancestors say, "turkey is great it would make a great Thanksgiving Holiday bird to eat." I know we are generally overpopulated in some areas, but jeez! Give us a Break!
The second reason is because,
We LOVE to watch football too! How can we watch football if we are on your table being carved up and Auntie Margaret and Little Tina are pulling each others hair out, fighting over who gets the opportunity to break the wish bone. NEWSFLASH, breaking the wishbone is not as cool as watching that dog on that old television called, "ummmmm, what was that show called?" "Come on, someone help me out here!" Cory, "The show was called, Wishbone Mr. Turkey, Wishbone." Mr. Turkey, "Ah! Yes! You see??? Much Cooler." All we want to do on Thanksgiving is watch football just like you! (Even though the Cowboys and Lions seem to always lose...(Go Patriots =) It doesn't matter, we want to be a live participants of the festivities, not lying on the table dead.
Finally,
Wait is there a third reason? Do we just hate it because we are the ones being eaten and we can't watch football? I mean us Turkey's do enjoy the holiday music that follows Thanksgiving and the pretty lights and all the festive joy in the world, but what is the point! Wait...after 392 years I think I have finally found the true meaning of being the main entree on Thanksgiving Day! There is no third reason why you should choose another bird, no, pick us! Take the Turkey! We are a delicious bird and we will serve you the best on Thanksgiving. It's not everyday that you get to be a part of a celebration that gives thanks for all we have and for who we care for and love the most in this world. Humans chose us because they care and love our meat the most! Wow, I finally see the truth to it all and it only took me 4 centuries!
On a final note, I would like to thank humans for honoring us on Thanksgiving, it's a true honor to be a part of a great celebration of giving thanks to the ones we love and the good health of all. I would be honored to be on your table this Thanksgiving season and I hope that you appreciate and give thanks that I finally figured out after nearly 400 years of running away, what Thanksgiving truly means for us turkey's. Have a great Thanksgiving break everyone and study hard at the end of the semester!
Tell me something unique you do at Thanksgiving time and have a chance to gain more Bullspride points for it! Have a great Thanksgiving break everyone and see you after! Go Bulls!

An Inside Look...
Men's Swimming and Diving.
Throughout this year I will be interviewing one, or some, of your teammates so your fellow UB student athletes can catch an inside look at other teams! This week I interviewed DJ McAninch of the Men's Swimming and Diving team.
1. DJ, what makes your team the most unique team at UB?
2. Excellent answer! If
you were going to have a chicken wing eating contest, who would win on your
team and why?
3. Atomic Wings?!? WHATTTTTT??? Who is the quietest person on your team? How about the most outspoken?
5. Tell me a team story that not many people would
know about?
6. "Take the Alamo" Fellas!! Who is the best dancer on your team?
7. Final question, Grey sweat suit, or business
casual?
Throughout this year I will be interviewing one, or some, of your teammates so your fellow UB student athletes can catch an inside look at other teams! This week I interviewed DJ McAninch of the Men's Swimming and Diving team.
1. DJ, what makes your team the most unique team at UB?
I think what makes us the most unique team is all the different personalities on the team. It's crazy to see how all of the personalities together from all across the country and from so many different backgrounds come together and work together towards one goal in the pool.
Definitely Mike Dugan, especially if it was an
atomic death eating wing contest, because Dugan is a stud wing eater.
Eric Jensen is the quietest because he is a freshman, but when it comes to the pool you can tell he puts a lot of fire into his swimming and he
is just biding his time to come out and be a team leader. The loudest is probably Dan O’Connor because he loves to
sing, but then again it could be Eric Culver...ehhh also Phil Aronica because he is just loud in general. Wait...and Matt Bitara just loves to scream. So I guess we have a lot of loud guys on our team...
4. What makes your team successful, and how do you
continue building to win championships?
I think it's because we are one of
the only teams and senior class left to have won a MAC Title. Everyone on the team knows what the
goal is from top to bottom and everyone is on board, we talk about it on a
daily basis amongst each other.
Every year we go paint-balling, and one
game was called take the Alamo, we did it by class and each class had to build a structure put
everyone else in it and then a massacre began. We all got tons of bruises and
laughs and it was a great time. So, somehow we connected that moment to a MAC Championship and now our team
motto has formed into “Take the Alamo” and it's our motivation to win a
title. Something strange that
brought us together as a team.
For those Historically inept...this is the Alamo. |
Matt Bitera. It's funny because he
thinks he is killing it, but he is not.
When a song comes on he immediately starts dancing and closes his eyes
and then starts to rip. Everyone gets a good laugh out of it and he is a good sport about it.
Definitely the Buffalo Bulls
sweatsuit, nothing more comfortable than chilling in sweats.
Thank you DJ for his awesome enthusiasm and excitement for this Blog! Look for more information next week on the Blog, type to you then! ;)

An Inside Look...
Women's Swimming and Diving.
Throughout this year I will be interviewing one, or some, of your teammates so your fellow UB student athletes can catch an inside look at other teams! This week I interviewed Taylor Steffl of the Women's Swimming and Diving team.
Thank you Taylor to her awesome insight on the Women's Swimming and Diving team! Stay tuned for next weeks Blog!
Throughout this year I will be interviewing one, or some, of your teammates so your fellow UB student athletes can catch an inside look at other teams! This week I interviewed Taylor Steffl of the Women's Swimming and Diving team.
1.
Taylor, what makes your team the most unique team at UB?
How close knit we are, no matter what
happens we are always there for each other. There are also many personalities on the team that make us
unique and great at the same time.
2.
Okay Nice! So, if
you were going to have a chicken wing eating contest, who would win on your
team and why?
Marissa Murphy. Why? Because she loves Chicken Wings. (The SAAC President?!?!?) I am in shock!!!!
3.
Who is the quietest person on your team? How about the most outspoken?
I think Courtney Cook is the quietest because she is a freshman and just a sweetheart! While on the other hand, Spencer Rodriguez is definitely
loudest because if you have never met her before she is incredibly friendly and is not a shy person.
4.
What makes your team successful, and how do you
continue building to win championships?
I believe that the trust and devotion we have makes us successful, and drives us every time we have a meet. Our goals makes us successful in
building to win championships.
5.
Tell me a team story that not many people would
know about?
One time we were all doing dry land work with
the men’s team and Phil Aronica was playing on the diving equipment and he fell
into the pool and it was hilarious!
6.
Who is the best dancer on your team?
Without a doubt, Alexis Valedon. Every time a song comes on
she is always just dancing and she has some really good moves!
7.
Final question Taylor, Grey sweat suit, or business
casual?
Cory...without a doubt in my mind, Grey Sweat suit. It's incredibly comfortable and I have to say, it's also very stylish!

Two Truths and a Lie...
For those of you unfamiliar with this game I will tell you three things and two of them are true while one of the statements is false. It is your job to find the lie. Sounds pretty simple right? Well lets see how good you are! Here are three statements about me.
1. I am left-handed.
2. I have 2 cats named Sox, and Finn.
3. I was an all-state golfer in high school and I have one hole-in-one in my golf career.
Come and tell me my lie. If you get it right I will give you Bulls Pride! If you get it wrong, then you have to tell me your own (two truths and a lie) and if you can stump me, then you will receive points that way! Enjoy your week and Go Bulls!
P.S. Happy Hump Day!!!

Athletes and Music
Many of us find our own ways to get in "the zone" before, during, or after competition. We all listen to music when we lift, but everyone is different! I know when I go on a run I have a list of songs (that changes frequently) that I listen to in order to really get in a groove! The types of music that teams listen to are very eclectic because every team is unique! When I run, I tend to listen to some great Pop music like Katy Perry and some oldies, but goodies such as MMMBop by Hanson!! But whatever it may be, everyone has there own taste! Let me know what your tastes are, or what your team listens to and then I will award you some great Bulls Pride points in return! Have a great week and a wonderful Hump Day! Go Bulls!

Athletes For Athletes
As
an E-board and a university, one of the things that we preach on an everyday
basis is to show spirit at all times.
Whether that spirit is on campus, off campus, or at a sporting event,
it’s important to always show your Bulls Pride. This year we have taken this Spirit to a new level. The attendance at AFA’s (Athletes for
Athletes) events has been fantastic and it is clear that the support within
Athletics is soaring high in the clouds.
With all the success the school has been having this year throughout its
fall sports seasons, it has been a fun and enjoyable environment to go and
watch the Bulls win games! It’s
not just the AFA events that have the E-board and many others singing the praises
of your work throughout Athletics, it is all your work in the community too! Attending more than just AFA’s to support your fellow athletes. We want to thank you for all of the
work and support you have put in this year! Continue the great work Bulls!

The Word of the Week
This week will be slightly different than most weeks. I am going to pick a word that I think should be the word of the week for UB Athletes and you should all take a moment to think about it this week.
The word for this week is IMAGINE. So imagine what you can accomplish in a lifetime? A lot, right? How about in a decade? Or a year? A month? But what about a week??? Imagine the possibilities there are for you to make a difference! Most of you are probably looking at the next week and you have 2 or 3 tests, practice, lift, and a lotttttttt of homework. But imagine you took two of those hours and did something you almost never do. How about volunteer at something? Maybe do a good deed everyday, for example, hold the door for an elderly couple, or pick up a piece of trash that you know shouldn't be there. Imagine you did a selfless act that no one saw, and you would never get any praise for it other than the self satisfaction that you did it. Imagine EVERYONE did this for the next week and it became contagious?!? Wow! We could accomplish a lot in a week! More than some people do in a lifetime! I want everyone to take a moment and imagine this. Make it as detailed as you can in your head, and then take that image and make it a reality! This is my challenge to you! Have a great week! and as always...GO BULLS!

You Crashed on an Island...
No one will be able to find you...you will be lost forever. The only people there for your immediate survival are the SAAC E-board members!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH! (Terrified scream). Everyone survives the crash, but you are now faced with the challenge of who to choose and survive with. Why not just all go together you say?? You do not want to all go together because there are too many mouths to feed at once so we split up! You can choose to go with Hilary, Cory, Marissa, Sarah, or Liz. Here is why you should choose Hilary!
Hilary knows the wild! She spends her free time looking for these things called Hellbenders, which are giant salamanders (ewww, throw-up) but she is handy in this situation! She knows the foliage better than anyone, and I know this because she took ecology with me and she knew the material! (I'm not sure what ecology was about, but I'm pretty sure foliage and plants was in there somewhere)! I have made my decision to tag along with Hilary because she makes the most sense! I can protect the group from things like frogs, snakes, and other slimy gross amphibious animals that we may encounter...(just kidding, Hilary will do that too). CAUTION, the following content may be disturbing to some viewers...
On a final note, Marissa has promised to feed her people with one jar of Peanut Butter for eternity, so if you want to go with her....(which I don't recommend) then I would follow Hilary. Liz has joined us and we are not sure what Sarah is up to these days, I think we lost her on the island somehow (whoops). Who will you follow? The greatest explorer of our time, Hilary? The one jar of peanut butter lady...(DON'T DO IT), or go help find Sarah lost in the Jungle? You decide! Let me know who you would follow for a chance to gain extra bonus points for the next round of points after tonight's SAAC meeting! Go Bulls!

3 Reasons Not to Miss...
THE WOMEN'S SOCCER AND FOOTBALL GAMES THIS WEEKEND!!!
1. You have nothing better to do than go out and support your fellow student athletes! But Cory...I have homework...unless you are in a doctoral program, you can time manage and get to the games and cheer on your Bulls, plus who knows...you may have........what's the word???? FUN?!?! What?!?!? CORYYYYYYYY what is fun? Well my young student-athlete friend, fun is when you go out and you find enjoyment, amusement, or lighthearted pleasure in that activity. And you will find that this Friday night at the Women's Soccer game at 7pm and this Saturday afternoon at the Football game beginning at 3:30pm.
2. Oh once upon a midnight dearie, The Blues Travelers came to UB to perform this Saturday 2 hours before the Football game. So lets Run-Around and get there to see this awesome band perform! Remember, the Hook brings you back ladies and gentlemen. Everyone knows these songs by the Blues Travelers and you want to hear them perform right here at UB!
3. Finally, (this one is a secret), so tell no one! If you read this blog post and you come up to me at some point this week or weekend and say the word Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious I will add EXTRA points to your spirit awards when you turn them in. So tell your teammates to read this blog and come to me with this response and I will record your team and name down. Have a great week and Go Bulls! (SHHHH there may be more opportunities throughout the year to continually gain extra points through the Blog....so spread the word and read the Blog)!

Together We Will...Be Champions...
5 words that mean everything. 5 words that will bring this university together and create a national buzz that attracts positive attention to our University. This past week was a complete display of these words. When the Volleyball team took the court, the men's and women's soccer teams took the field and the football team entered The Horseshoe, there was a vibe around this campus that I have never seen before! There was a support system around the student athlete community that sent chills down my spine! We came together as one and started our road to becoming champions! The phrase Together we will...Be champions, means that no one alone, or no team alone, can accomplish winning championships. It takes an entire student-athlete body, to work together supporting one another and out performing our competition in the classroom, the weight room, and on the field to win championships. And we did JUST THAT this past weekend.
Together we have the unique opportunity to turn this university into a nationally recognized sports institutions and bring our programs to new heights! it is YOU that is doing this! The AFA for men's soccer this past weekend was the craziest, loudest, AFA party we have seen, with Eric Culver, Carissa McKenna, Phil Aronica, and Mackenzie Loesing leading the way in cheers and chants to cheer the men on in their battle against Vermont! Keep up the awesome work and enthusiasm!! See you all soon! GO BULLS!!!

The 8 Different Types of Roommates!
This article is meant to shed some light on what types of roommates are out there. These examples are from the baseball team, but I am sure many of you can find roommates on your own teams that can relate to some of these examples! I hope you enjoy! Go Bulls!
1. The Dan Ginader
This
roommate reaffirms why you always hated to go to your grandparent’s house for
vacation. Where TV volume can’t be
above 10 and the lights must be out by 8:30 pm.
2. The Kanzler
This
roommate lets it all hang loose and isn’t afraid of doing some pregame singing
routines, which resemble that of Andrea Bocelli and Michael Crawford.
3. The Jimmy Topps
This
roommate is unique because he is your classic two for one deal. He always comes with a friend attached
at the hip, such as (Nick Sinay).
4. The River McWilliams/Ben Hartz
This
roommate roars like a lion in their sleep. They snore incredibly loud and only one person in the room
that night gets a decent nights worth of sleep.
5. The Dale
This
roommate came straight out of the Twilight Saga. They never sleep, but they also never bother you and give you all the space you need.
6. The Kyle Brennan
You
should be cautious of this roommate.
They tend to stare at you while you fall asleep and also perform random
stretching routines throughout the entire weekend.
7. The Anthony Magovney
This
roommate never leaves the room except for game time and meals. They lie on their bed all day long and
watch TV, not doing much at all.
8. Finally the Perfect roommate…
These
roommates don’t exist. Yes sorry
to burst your bubble, but there is no such thing as the perfect roommate on the
road. Everyone does something that we find to be somewhat annoying to us. We all wish this was possible, but
until the perfect roommate exists I guess we will have to live with all the
great teammates at UB!

What is Your Deepest Fear?
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate...just kidding, I will not be quoting Coach Carter in this blog. Here on the e-board we would like to let you know our deepest fear. Our deepest fear is that one day space aliens will come down and swoop up our President, Marissa Murphy, and then the SAAC group will be run by me....(Cory Folk)...yikes!!! Just kidding again!! You all are probably like wow get to the point already Cory! Okay....fine...I will tell you our deepest fear...it's not thattttttttt exciting so don't jump out of your seats!!!!....
Okay...
Our
Deepest
Darkest
Fear
Is.....
Eating too much white bread and then exploding and not being able to perform in our sports....I know so scary!!! As athletes we have been blessed by the Newman Center for hosting the majority of our SAAC Meetings on Wednesday nights. But we all skip the salad and go straight for the white rolls that are so fluffy and good. This is bad! But who cares!!! If our SAAC President loves the white bread, all of us can indulge in it now and again! Who cares!! So now you all know a deep secret of the SAAC E-board. What is your deepest fear? And can you overcome that fear one day, or have you overcome a fear already before??

Hair Loss in College...yeah it actually happens...
Hey college kids!!! Welcome to the latest blog this week! Today I'm going to give you some tips about and how to deal with hair loss while in college, so you don't end up bald after 4 years at UB!
Tip #1: Go to class and every SAAC meeting! It will save you from hair loss by approximately 40%, according to leading hair loss specialists! and looking like me! And if none of you have seen my shiny "Mr. Clean" like bald head then you are really missing out!!!
Tip #2: Don't forget to have fun! Go out and meet new people, one study at the University of Hair Loss in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, shows that if you meet 5 new people a day, it will actually increase the hair growth on top of your head and bring more volume!
Someone on the UB campus that knows about volume is Women's Soccer player Megan Abman. She says that the first thing you have to do to get great volume out of your hair is thank the "rents" (for anyone, like myself, who has no idea what that is; it means your Parents)! Secondly, all you have to do is use the right products, dry and BAM! #fabulous!!!!
My question to Megan was:
Q: How has the volume of your hair impacted your social life? Do you think people look at you differently because you have a great head of hair compared to someone, such as, Cory Folk?
She replied with...
A: "Having voluminous hair makes my charm so contagious they have literally made vaccinations for it. (It) Gives me the confidence to ace any test...and yes that includes a Rorschach test. The police constantly question me just because they find me interesting and when I live my life with these luscious locks, I don't live to beef up my resume, I live to beef up my obituary."
You heard it hear first Folks!
The receding hairline is a brutal reality for some people, especially us men....(You know who you all are fellas), not all of us were blessed with a great head of hair like Brad Pitt or Bradley Cooper, but we can all make it with what we have!!!
P.S. (All of these scientific stats are not real and they should not be taken seriously by the reader).

3 Tips on What UB Gear says about you!
With great athletic
talent comes great responsibility…and gear. Here are a few pointers that let
you know what your UB gear says about you and the fashion statement you deliver
with every entrance you make.
3. Oh, is that you? Rockin’ the grey sweat bottoms the third
time this week? This week!?!? No worries. Although others may look at you with
disgust, let me assure you that it is an excellent decision that all
Student-Athletes give an approving and hearty thumbs up to.
I mean lets be honest here. They
are tight enough to mask any unwanted odor after practice while simultaneously
remaining baggy enough to hide any awkward bulges from any ice packs, oh let’s
say for instance, in or around the groin or glute region. We’ve all been there.
It’s awkward and there really is no way to be casual about it. But hey, just
slip on a pair of those greys and POOF you are magically somewhat
normal looking…except for the waddle when you walk, the squeaking noise of the
ice bag and saran wrap rubbing together, and the questioning looks you receive when
the ice bag pops and it looks as though you have soiled yourself…#swag.
Strutting around in the grey sweats
more then 60% of the time demonstrates that you are a confident individual who
does not let anything phase them. Or it could also demonstrate that you are a
lazy individual who has no regard for personal hygiene. Either way, you look
great. Keep doing you baby!
3. Weight room attire…oh my oh my oh my…where do I even begin?
We all have our pet peeves especially on other team’s fashion styles. For now,
here are some personal tips so you
can stay fashionable while getting swole.
First and foremost, DO NOT wear tie-dye. Ever. What are we?
Enrolled in a middle school summer camp? Please. “Oh you play for Crayola?”…Just
don’t, you get the idea. Wear the bull and the gear provided! DO utilize fabreeze products as a
substitute for a shower/perfume if you have class in the next five minutes
following woodways. Trust me. It is the only way your classmates will accept
you. BONUS TIP: Mid-calves socks accentuate
the calves to help you look even more sexy…you sexy beast you…(insert growl). Fun fact: The mid-calves also
conveniently provide the ladies with just enough coverage so in case they
forget to shave for the past three weeks (or an entire semester), they can
still feel great doing those hang cleans. I mean honestly, who would prefer to
spend the extra ten minutes shaving their legs over sleep? Honestly? Is that
even a question? Exactly.
1. And finally, to wrap things up, when you rock the full
sweat suit (formally referenced as either
‘greys on greys on greys’ trend or even the full blown blueberry
impressionist) you are simply telling the world that on that day, you really do
not care…like literally zero point zero zero percentage of cares are given. And
with that, when you wear jeans, yes, that does in fact count as you ‘dressing
up’. And everyone should acknowledge that. Even the professor should consider
giving you extra credit for that day.

Just Like the Monkey Bars from Elementary School
We all ride buses and I believe that every team, minus tennis, sorry ladies and gentlemen :/, have experienced going to the bathroom at the back of the bus when it is pitch black inside and everyone is sleeping across the halls. If you are sitting at the front of the bus, how do you move your way to the back of the bus when everyone is sleeping and there is hardly any room to move?!?!? Well there are several methods. First you can climb over everyone, or maybe crawl under all the legs army style. But there are times when you must use the combination, which can be tricky! We have all done this and its part of the traveling process. I wonder which team has the most difficult time with this...?? Just another great aspect of the experiences we have as student athletes!

5 Things Student Athletes Should Do in Buffalo!
This is a list that I have created that all student athletes should do during their downtime to explore the many adventures of Buffalo! This list is in no particular order, but they should all be done in your careers here at UB with teammates and friends!
1. Go to Niagara Falls! How often do you live in a place where there is majestic natural beauty that people travel from all around the world to see!! Many of you have probably gone already.....GO AGAIN!!!
2. Go to the movies! The movies are a great place to hang out and relax AFTER classes and practice!
3. The Walden Galleria! This mall is great! Awesome food and shops fill the mall and its a great place to get away from campus.
4. Shea's Performing Arts Center. Everyone should try to make it to at least one show here before they graduate! They bring in a vast array of performances for everyone's pleasure!
5. Finally, This one is a dare! Someone go out, find a place they loved and report it back to me. Then I will make a blog about it! All about you and the place you went and why other student athletes should go there! Who will be the first to report back to me?!?

Swimming and Diving Come up JUST Short vs. Eastern Michigan
The UB Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams fell just short of victories against Eastern Michigan this past weekend. It was a tough defeat for the Men as it came down to the last race of the event! Some notables names on the day were UB's Mike Dugan who won two events, Kelsey Barbour who won the 100 Breaststroke, and Colin McAllister who won the 1,000 yard freestyle.
The UB Spirit was out, as both teams asked for their fellow student-athletes to wear Blue in support of the team as they competed against Eastern. The Students were just as crazy as the UB Parents were that day! It was a hard fought battle in the UB Pool, and it will only make the two teams more hungry as they go into their next meet against St. Bonaventure at home on February 2nd! Go out and support the teams as they take down the Bonnies!! Go Bulls!
